Bila je skrbno vzgojena hči gospode Karoline, on pa je bil suh kmet najemnik, ki v življenju ni imel ničesar v lasti. Po katastrofalni poroki z brutalnim potepuhom je bila na novo ovdovela. Nikoli ni prosil ženske, da bi mu naredila kaj več, kot da mu pomaga zaskočiti mulo. Niso se tako zaljubili, saj so se preprosto našli in držali za drago življenje.

Prvi roman Kaye Gibbons, Ellen Foster, je prejel nagrado Sue Kaufman za prvo fikcijo Ameriške akademije in Inštituta za umetnost in pisma ter pohvale pisateljev od Walkerja Percyja do Eudore Welty. V filmu Virtuous Woman Gibbons preseže svojo zgodnjo obljubo in ustvari večplastni in neizbrisno prepričljiv portret dveh na videz slabo usklajenih ljudi, ki se nekako čudežno skleneta.
